Anxiety Clem Thurman

{How to Rid Yourself of Anxiety} Philippians 4:6-9 ASV

Introduction THREE SOURCES OF ANXIETY:

1. What we do that violates our conscience

2. The results of our wrong decisions in life

3. The reaction to what others say and do We must live in TODAY. “Yesterday is gone, tomorrow may not come.” How do we do this? Put your trust in the Lord God created the world for man’s habitation (Galatians 1:1-25) God then created man in His image (Genesis 1:26-27)  “26And God said, Let us make man in our image, after our likeness: and let them have dominion over the fish of the sea, and over the fowl of the air, and over the cattle, and over all the earth, and over every creeping thing that creepeth upon the earth.   27So God created man in his own image, in the image of God created he him; male and female created he them.” THEREFORE, God knows what I need to function properly (Jeremiah 10:23)  “O LORD, I know that the way of man is not in himself: it is not in man that walketh to direct his steps.” I must follow God’s word 1Peter 5:6-7  “6Humble yourselves therefore under the mighty hand of God, that he may exalt you in due time:  7Casting all your care upon him; for he careth for you.” “He is faithful that promised” (Hebrews 10:23) “Abraham believed God” (Romans 4:3) --Not “believe in”, but BELIEVED --Trusted Him 1 2 Believe in Yourself IF we believe in God, we must believe in ourselves, we are His instrument. (Philippians 2:13)  “For it is God which worketh in you both to will and to do of his good pleasure.” (Matthew 19:26)  “But Jesus beheld them, and said unto them, With men this is impossible; but with God all things are possible.” IF we believe that God can work through us, we will believe in ourselves. God’s people believe that God can use them David (1Samuel 17:37)  “David said moreover, The LORD that delivered me out of the paw of the lion, and out of the paw of the bear, he will deliver me out of the hand of this Philistine. And Saul said unto David, Go, and the LORD be with thee.” Paul (Philippians 4:10-13)  “10But I rejoiced in the Lord greatly, that now at the last your care of me hath flourished again; wherein ye were also careful, but ye lacked opportunity.   11Not that I speak in respect of want: for I have learned, in whatsoever state I am, therewith to be content. 12I know both how to be abased, and I know how to abound: every where and in all things I am instructed both to be full and to be hungry, both to abound and to suffer need.  13I can do all things through Christ which strengtheneth me.” For US today…. (Romans 8:31)  “What shall we then say to these things? If God be for us, who can be against us?” (Romans 8:37)  “Nay, in all these things we are more than conquerors through him that loved us.” 3 Be Concerned for Others NOT like Cain… (Genesis 4:9)  “And the LORD said unto Cain, Where is Abel thy brother? And he said, I know not: Am I my brother's keeper?” The Greatest Commandment…. (Matthew 22:37-40)  “37Jesus said unto him, Thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy mind.  38This is the first and great commandment.  39And the second is like unto it, Thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself.  40On these two commandments hang all the law and the prophets.” We are “connected” to those around us in the eyes of God We cannot neglect them without suffering anxiety Paul’s attitude…. (Romans 1:14-16) “14I am debtor both to the Greeks, and to the Barbarians; both to the wise, and to the unwise.  15So, as much as in me is, I am ready to preach the gospel to you that are at Rome also.  16For I am not ashamed of the gospel of Christ: for it is the power of God unto salvation to every one that believeth; to the Jew first, and also to the Greek.” He realized he owed for what others had done for him He realized he owed for what GOD had done for him THEREFORE…. (Galatians 6:9-10)  “9And let us not be weary in well doing: for in due season we shall reap, if we faint not.  10As we have therefore opportunity, let us do good unto all men, especially unto them who are of the household of faith.” Always strive to do the right thing Jesus always did what was right (Hebrews 5:8-9)  “8Though he were a Son, yet learned he obedience by the things which he suffered;  9And being made perfect, he became the author of eternal salvation unto all them that obey him;” He went through what WE go through (Hebrews 4:15)  “For we have not an high priest which cannot be touched with the feeling of our infirmities; but was in all points tempted like as we are, yet without sin.” The KEY to Jesus’ obedience… (John 6:38)  “For I came down from heaven, not to do mine own will, but the will of him that sent me.” 4 God has a purpose for us In sinless paradise, Adam and Eve had a purpose.. (Genesis 2:15-17)  “15And the LORD God took the man, and put him into the garden of Eden to dress it and to keep it.  16And the LORD God commanded the man, saying, Of every tree of the garden thou mayest freely eat:  17But of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil, thou shalt not eat of it: for in the day that thou eatest thereof thou shalt surely die.” Solomon recognized God’s purpose for him.. (Ecclesiastes 12:13)  “Let us hear the conclusion of the whole matter: Fear God, and keep his commandments: for this is the whole duty of man.” We must give complete obedience to God (1Peter 1:13-22)  “13Wherefore gird up the loins of your mind, be sober, and hope to the end for the grace that is to be brought unto you at the revelation of Jesus Christ;  14As obedient children, not fashioning yourselves according to the former lusts in your ignorance:  15But as he which hath called you is holy, so be ye holy in all manner of conversation;  16Because it is written, Be ye holy; for I am holy.  17And if ye call on the Father, who without respect of persons judgeth according to every man's work, pass the time of your sojourning here in fear: 18Forasmuch as ye know that ye were not redeemed with corruptible things, as silver and gold, from your vain conversation received by tradition from your fathers;  19But with the precious blood of Christ, as of a lamb without blemish and without spot:  20Who verily was foreordained before the foundation of the world, but was manifest in these last times for you,  21Who by him do believe in God, that raised him up from the dead, and gave him glory; that your faith and hope might be in God.  22Seeing ye have purified your souls in obeying the truth through the Spirit unto unfeigned love of the brethren, see that ye love one another with a pure heart fervently:” (1John 5:1-3)  “1Whosoever believeth that Jesus is the Christ is born of God: and every one that loveth him that begat loveth him also that is begotten of him.  2By this we know that we love the children of God, when we love God, and keep his commandments.  3For this is the love of God, that we keep his commandments: and his commandments are not grievous.” IF we try to give God “part” of our lives, our anxiety won’t leave From the “Reader’s Digest” magazine….. Dear Sirs: Enclosed find $200 cash. I cheated on my income tax Last year, but I covered myself so I know you will never Catch it. This bothers me, so please accept this money.

P.S. If I still can’t sleep, I’ll send the rest” 5 ENJOY the Life that God Gave You Jesus’ plan for happiness in the “beatitudes” (Matthew 5) The “poor in spirit” and “they that mourn” are not happy because of external circumstances, but because of what they were and how they thought Paul realized this too (Philippians 4:11-12)  “11Not that I speak in respect of want: for I have learned, in whatsoever state I am, therewith to be content.  12I know both how to be abased, and I know how to abound: every where and in all things I am instructed both to be full and to be hungry, both to abound and to suffer need.” Paul had problems.. (2Corinthians 12:7)  “And lest I should be exalted above measure through the abundance of the revelations, there was given to me a thorn in the flesh, the messenger of Satan to buffet me, lest I should be exalted above measure.”

a. God told him… (2Corinthians 12:9)   “And he said unto me, My grace is sufficient for thee: for my strength is made perfect in weakness. Most gladly therefore will I rather glory in my infirmities, that the power of Christ may rest upon me.”

b. Therefore, Paul’s attitude was… (2Corinthians 12:10)  “Therefore I take pleasure in infirmities, in reproaches, in necessities, in persecutions, in distresses for Christ's sake: for when I am weak, then am I strong.” We must learn to be happy where we are Paul told his shipmates in the storm that God had promised them safety. Then he added…. (Acts 27:25)  Wherefore, sirs, be of good cheer: for I believe God, that it shall be even as it was told me.” Faith that God is in control overcomes anxiety
